The Broad and Metro Art present Ann Hamilton, Pearl C. Hsiung, and Mungo Thomson in conversation. Moderated by Broad Curator and Publications Manager Ed Schad.
Located adjacent to the museum, the new Metro Grand Av Arts/Bunker Hill Station features strikingly beautiful, large-scale, architecturally integrated artworks by Ann Hamilton, Pearl C. Hsiung, and Mungo Thomson. The artists will discuss concepts behind each of the artwork designs for these site-specific commissions. The conversation will explore how each artist’s studio practice and past works informed their approach to these monumental public artworks, which transform the transit journey into a unique art experience. After the program, the artists will accompany guests into the transit station to experience the artworks in person.

Ann Hamilton (b. 1956, Lima, Ohio) centers metaphorical structures and material processes of textiles as large-scale site-responsive installations, performance collaborations, print media, and public projects. Inspired by histories and geographies of place, Hamilton’s artworks often juxtapose expressions of language and tactile materiality to explore relationships between the individual and the collective. Hamilton earned a BFA in textile design from the University of Kansas and an MFA in sculpture from the Yale School of Art. She represented the United States in the 1991 Sao Paulo Biennale and the 1999 Venice Biennale. Hamilton is a Distinguished University Professor Emerita in the Department of Art at The Ohio State University. Among her many honors, Hamilton has been the recipient of the National Medal of the Arts, Heinz Award, MacArthur Fellowship, and more.
Pearl C. Hsiung (b. 1973, Taiwan) is an artist and educator whose multi-disciplinary practice utilizes various techniques and conceptual strategies to explore physical, psychical, and metaphysical metamorphosis. These investigations often focus on human and non-human relationships to, within, and as nature. She earned a Bachelor of Arts from the University of California, Los Angeles, and a Master of Fine Arts from Goldsmiths College, London. Her paintings, installations, and video works have been exhibited extensively throughout the Los Angeles region and in the US, Asia, Europe, and Mexico. Hsiung has been awarded a California Cultural Foundation Fellowship and artist residencies from the Art Production Fund, Heart of Los Angeles (HOLA), Red Mansion Foundation, and the National Park Service for the Santa Monica Mountains and Whiskeytown National Recreation Area, and the National Park Service for the Santa Monica Mountains and Whiskeytown National Recreation Area. She is an Assistant Professor of Drawing and Painting at CSULB.
Mungo Thomson (b. 1969, Woodland, California) approaches mass culture and everyday perceptual experience through a lens of deep time and cosmic scale, implicating the spaces of production and exhibition along the way in ever-widening extrapolations. He has convened an orchestral ensemble to perform a score transcribed from the chirping of crickets, persuaded museums to let their incoming mail pile up unopened in the galleries for the run of an exhibition and replaced the coat-hangers in the Whitney Museum’s coat check with custom-made hangers modeled on orchestral triangles, transforming it into an enormous musical instrument. Mungo Thomson attended the Whitney Museum Independent Study Program in New York and earned a Master of Fine Arts from the University of California, Los Angeles. His work is held in the public collections of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art; Museo Jumex, México City; FRAC Île-de-France, Paris; GAMeC, Bergamo, Italy; and BY ART MATTERS, Hangzhou, China, among others.
