Starting with a portrait of yourself from our Snap Yourself photo booth, and using different craft techniques, create your own work inspired by artists David Hammons, Genevieve Gaignard, and other artists in The Broad’s current special exhibition, This is not America’s Flag, which features over twenty artists and spotlights the myriad ways they explore the symbolism of the United States flag, underscoring its many different meanings. Show us what YOUR flag looks like by using different colors, shapes, and symbols!
Family Weekend Workshops take place outdoors on the East West Bank Plaza at The Broad and offer free activities and workshops to engage with the art on view in the museum. David Hammons once commented that “outrageously magical things happen when you mess around with a symbol” (Kellie Jones, 1968 interview). Working in an array of different media and tackling a vast spectrum of topics, Hammon maintained a commitment to social commentary throughout his work in the 70s and the 80s in Los Angeles and New York. One of his best-known pieces, the African-American Flag, a center price of the current exhibition at The Broad This is not America’s Flag, combines elements of a pan-African and a U.S. flag, “prompts us to think about the relationship between America and its Black citizens…the split between an African identity….an American identity, that has often found itself in conflict” [“Todd Boyd on David Hammons” Up Close at The Broad]. His formal and conceptual brilliance as well as his unpredictable ways, made Hammons, one of the most prestigious American artists of the last decades.
Genevieve Gaignard (b.1981) is a multidisciplinary artist who uses self-portraiture, collage, sculpture, and installation to create dialogue around race, beauty, and cultural identity. She splits her time between her hometown of Orange, Massachusetts, and Los Angeles.
