Workshop | Mark Bradford is known for using discarded materials found on the streets of cities such as advertisements, flyers, billboards, comic books, and more. Bradford applies many layers of these materials on the surface of his canvases, and then cuts, tears, and sands them down to create his artwork. Create a wearable accessory made of recycled materials inspired by Bradford’s process and technique.
Workshop | Betye Saar created sculptural pieces made from wood, leather, straw, plastic, cotton, metal, paint, and more. Her work centered on women, history, and spirituality. Create wall hangings inspired by Saar’s work on view in Soul of a Nation.
Workshop | Jae Jarrell created garments that were not only wearable art, but also pieces of empowerment and pride. Revolutionary Suit (1969) features a bandolier with crayons. Create a set of buttons for your own sash that display issues important to you, based on Jarrell’s work on view in Soul of a Nation.
Workshop | Artists Emory Douglas and Faith Ringgold created art that demonstrated their political beliefs and work. They used bold colors and language to speak their truths. Create your own posters inspired by the revolutionary spirit of Douglas and Ringgold.
Demonstration | Learn how the chefs of Otium restaurant use fresh ingredients as culinary inspiration. Watch how vegetables and herbs harvested from Otium’s onsite vertical urban garden are transformed into delicious meals for families.
Workshops | The Southern California Library documents and makes accessible histories of struggles that challenge racism and other systems of oppression so we can all imagine and sustain possibilities for freedom. The Southern California Library is a community library and archive located in South Los Angeles. Founded over 50 years ago, the Library holds extensive collections of histories of community resistance in Los Angeles, and beyond. Create collages and abstract pieces and more in the style of artists Sam Gilliam, Alma Thomas, and Romare Bearden; create a redacted poem with selections from the Library’s archive; take a quiz that that highlights the historical context of Soul of a Nation.
