Saturday Screenings: Shirin Neshat

In conjunction with Shirin Neshat: I Will Greet the Sun Again, The Broad presents a screening of Shirin Neshat’s feature-length films, Women Without Men and Looking for Oum Kulthum, and The Making of Shirin Neshat’s Land of Dreams, a documentary by Sophie Chahinian on the artist’s process and intention behind the creation of her most recent body of work that explores cultural identity from the perspective of a female Iranian photographer traveling across the United States.

Each film is shown once during the screenings, which are every Saturday during the run of the exhibition from 11 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. Guests may enter and leave the screenings as desired.

• Women Without Men (2009) 95 minutes
  
  This film adaptation of a novel by Shahrnush Parsipur is Shirin Neshat’s first dramatic feature and profiles the lives of four women living in Tehran in 1953, during the American-backed coup that returned the Shah of Iran to power.
   
• Looking for Oum Kulthum (2017) 90 minutes
  
  A film within a film, Looking for Oum Kulthum portrays the plight of an Iranian woman filmmaker living in exile, as she embarks on capturing the life and art of the legendary female singer of the Arab world, Oum Kulthum.
   
• The Making of Shirin Neshat’s Land of Dreams by Sophie Chahinian (2019) 25 minutes
  
  Chahinian's documentary provides an alternate perspective on Shirin Neshat’s process and intention, contributing to a more textured experience of the video installations included in Shirin Neshat: I Will Greet the Sun Again. Key members of the Land of Dreams film team provide insightful commentary about the personal and political backdrop to the surreal videos as they were being created.
