The Un-Private Collection: Elliott Hundley + Anne Carson + Robert Currie + Grand Arts
Overview
In this special iteration of The Broad’s Un-Private Collection series, Broad collection artist Elliott Hundley, renowned poet Anne Carson, and Carson’s collaborator Robert Currie team up with Ramón C. Cortines School of Visual and Performing Arts (Grand Arts). Students and faculty at the school will participate in theater workshops, field trips to The Broad and Hundley’s studio, and backdrop and prop-making sessions to develop and stage Carson’s “Pinplay,” a reimagining of Euripides's Greek tragedy, The Bacchae, through the lens of Hundley’s artwork the high house low! (2011), which is on view at The Broad in the exhibition Since Unveiling: Selected Acquisitions of a Decade through April 3, 2022. Following the play performance, Hundley, Carson, and Currie will be in conversation with the Grand Arts students to discuss collaboration and the process of making the play.

Biographies
Elliot Hundley
Elliot Hundley’s dynamic sculptures, collages, and paintings employ cut photographs, natural objects, urban detritus, paint, stick pins, and countless other materials, giving them an ephemeral, ad-hoc effect in a gallery space. Often Hundley’s work features dramatic narrative arcs found in classic epic poetry and plays, contrasting the fragility of the materials with a loose plot line that the viewer can follow. Hundley’s work has a large art historical pedigree, ranging from the early combine sculptures of Robert Rauschenberg to the provisional minimalism of Richard Tuttle to the elaborate narrative impulses of many contemporary artists.
Anne Carson
Anne Carson was born in Canada and teaches ancient Greek for a living. She is a poet, essayist, and highly regarded translator of classical writers such as Sappho and Euripides. Carson’s recent collections include Red Doc> (2013), Float (2016), and Bakkhai (2017). Her honors and awards include fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation, the MacArthur Foundation, and the American Academy in Berlin. She has received the Lannan Literary Award, the Pushcart Prize, and the Griffin Poetry Prize. Carson attended the University of Toronto, earning her BA, MA, and PhD in Classics, and has taught at many universities in both the U.S. and Canada, including McGill and the University of Michigan. Anne Carson regularly collaborates with Robert Currie, an artist and randomizer who lives often in Iceland.
About The Un-Private Collection
The Un-Private Collection is an ongoing series of public programs The Broad began in September 2013. The series introduces audiences to the museum’s 2,000-work contemporary art collection by showcasing stories behind the collection, the collectors and the artists. Since launching the program, The Broad has brought together a variety of artists whose works are in the Broad collection in conversation with cultural leaders, including Mark Bradford with Katy Siegel, Shirin Neshat with Christy MacLear, Jeff Koons with John Waters, Takashi Murakami with Pico Iyer, Eric Fischl with Steve Martin, John Currin with James Cuno, Kara Walker with Ava DuVernay and architect Elizabeth Diller with Eli Broad, Joanne Heyler and Paul Goldberger. Talks have been held at venues throughout Los Angeles, making the programming available to audiences across the city. Conversations are live-streamed and full videos of past talks are available online. The Un-Private Collection series is part of the Broad collection’s 30-year mission to make contemporary art accessible to the widest possible audience.
